Yeah - you know and I know that creating fabric folds and wrinkles for any project can be the most time-consuming task. Whether it be for a concept design, in-game character outfit (Second Life, WOW, ZWINKY) or for a design that includes fabric this task sometimes can eat away at the valuable hours of your day.

Well no more of that. I've created a very unique set of brushes that should, at the very least, ease your pain. Folds and Wrinkles is a set of brushes that will enable you to create lovely draped fabric, wrinkled vests and subdutaneous folds of flesh on whatever your working on. What I learned from Second Life...

I was thinking about Second Life and the fact that I haven't played on it in a while. I have a few items that I WAS making but I think I've hit a depression or something... More on that later. But I realized that SL taught me more than most of my professional jobs ever did or could. So I thought that I might list some of the things that others might find useful - at least as an artist or marketeer:

#1 Planning and Process

Second Life is a rich (read: complicated) environment where what you do, who you meet, what you create depends entirely up to you. So I dove in about 4 years ago expecting to get started with my Digital Fashion house immediately.

Whoa! Not so fast there lil missy! After about a month of struggling and trying to get my stuff together I realized that I needed proper planning. In SL even the most trivial of concepts requires planning. I won't go into too much detail but because of the nature of SL, you have to KNOW absolutely what you want to do. A plan or at least a process that you have set - guides you and keeps your files from getting out of control, keeps you from missing deadlines and most importantly it keeps you from loosing your mind.

If you took a gander at my products in SL - over a space of about 6 months time I became very good at organizing and was able to produce over 50 colors/styles of clothing or outfits in very little time (about 3 days). This includes creating the outfit in Photoshop/ZBrush/3DS Max, Uploading it to SL, Creating the different colors and styles in SL, Boxing it up, Taking Modeling Pics, Creating signs or ads, uploading all of those signs to SL, XStreet and several other places. Not only that but with a plan and process you know exactly how to name things, where they should be put and what to do once you are finished. Which makes life easier when a customer comes to you asking about an item that they bought but for some reason didn't have the item in the box... Personally I blame the sneaky asset server gremlins, but a customer is a customer and they deserve competence.

I think that a lot of people in SL have no idea what lengths creators go to to make stuff and sell it or even give it away.

#2 Photoshop

Now when I started in SL I would have said that my skills were expert level. Again - I had a lot to learn. Not only did SL's limitations and file requirements FORCE me to learn how to really manipulate overlay layers, use the burn/dodge tools, adjustment layers, alpha channel etc. But I also got a heaping of scripting knowledge to boot.

Something that if I hadn't touched SL - I just wouldn't have been aware of. I now use that knowledge where I work. I can export a series of JPGs out of a PSD like no one's business BECAUSE I know exactly how to create files that are not only easy to navigate but easy to change. Layer Comps, scripts, channels, adjustment layers - these are your friends. Don't forget it!

#3 ZBrush

I had NEVER heard of ZBrush before coming in contact with SL. This program was really hard for me to learn. It is nothing like a 3D program or a 2D program but at the same time it is. This program took me over 1 year to learn and use in a manner that I was satisfied with. I can now create just about anything - but like Photoshop this program has so many depths that I do not think I'll ever be finished learning. I'm still hunting for tutorials everyday and I make items in it every chance I get. I love that program and I love SL for making me learn how to use it.

#4 Marketing and Networking

What good is a product or a store if no one ever hears about it. The first store I had was small and rather cute. My friend (who I now hold responsible for my SL addiction) Charlotte Morlette let me use some of her land for my store and I thought that perhaps some of her overflow traffic would come to my store.

That didn't happen at all. It's not like Field of Dreams "If you build it they will come" kinda thing. It's more like - "Yay! You built it... Now get the freaking word out stupid!"

After Floundering for a few weeks etc. I started searching in SL and on Google and asking people, going to blogs etc. It took me a while but I found out how to market my stuff effectively. Honestly though - the marketing portion of selling goods in SL is where a majority of my time went. AFTER I completed a project and set up signs etc.. I would spend about a week or more sending notices, taking out ads, tweeting it, posting it, sending gifts to bloggers etc. (This is probably why I stopped doing stuff on the grid more than anything else).

This part of SL truly showed me guerrilla marketing, social marketing etc. You won't sell a damn thing if you don't market yourself and this holds true in real life as well. Whether you own a brick and morter store or if your stuff is completely online, YOU HAVE TO MARKET YOUR STUFF! Also you really have to make connections and talk to people. Sometimes that is the best way to market your items. Make friends, give presents, ask for feedback etc.

#5 Sometimes you gotta take a break...

It saddens me but at the same time I think I was in need of a good long break. I work full-time as a motion graphic artist or vfx compositor (depending on the day of the week), and SL became a chore. I no longer looked forward to logging in and seeing if any of my friends were online, simply because most of the time they weren't. I didn't even want to open Photoshop to make stuff. I often found myself actively procrastinating (against my own deadlines really) and doing other stuff when I was supposed make something to sell (or give away - I did a lot of that too). It became another job. And although I do like doing stuff for SL - the entire process became a chore. So I stopped. Although recently I've been a little more interested in it and I will probably get back into the game again, I'm not rushing. Simply because I need some time to grow outside the digital walls and explore other avenues.

I think that's about all for right now. If I think of anything else, I'll post it as a continuation of this list. I'm absolutely sure that there are about 500 things, but atm I'm late to an appointment and just like the white rabbit I must skedaddle.

I haven't officially announced this but I feel that it is time to do so. I haven't released anything new in over 6 months (although truthfully I've worked on items and never completed them), primarily because RL has become incredibly busy and frankly I'm just too darned tired to even look at a computer screen when I'm at home.

So - I no longer have a store to walk into etc. It's just been too hard to maintain and watch over. Plus because of my lack of involvement - obviously sales have dropped. Yeah - can't really justify spending all the dough on SL if I'm not actually doing anything (even playing would justify it but I don't log on that often anymore).

But...

I am a Motion Graphics or CG Artist by day and Second Life Fashion designer by night. I love that in SL there are no limits and you can create anything you want, be anything you want and pretty much go anywhere.

You know, people in Second Life come and go and there is a flux in the kind of creativity and the available offerings by merchants. One of the people closing their store is Welpie Heinrichs of WISH. This is sad news. Of course she will remain in SL - but more of an observer an much less as a creative contributor. While some people might be clapping and jumping for joy - I am not. After the problems I've faced with Soigne closing and finding a new home for my store it is bittersweet that finding out the friend who helped me is closing her store/brand down.

I still am shaking my head about the whole mess. Her reasoning behind closing is because she needed to concentrate more on her RL and the amount of money going toward her brand here was not condusive to doing so. It was no longer feasible to stay in business. I honestly cannot blame her. While some of you who do create items and sell them have no limit on the amount of time you can spend doing so think that people who create things are all like that - a lot of us are everyday people who have jobs, family and other things that we are responsible for.

When Linden Labs starts making it harder to create items and even starts removing items from XStreet for what ever reason - people involved in that process realize that in the end SL is just a fancy. They drop it. Why should they spend countless hours making items only to have those items copied? What about the face that spending those hours doesn't pay much more than $.05 an hour when everything is said and done - or even less because there are less people here to buy. I forsee SL coming to an end very soon because of this trend. I believe that in a few years it will mirror SIMS in that all the content is controlled by LL. While this might be effective in controlling content theft it doesn't make for a very "creative" environment.

In any case if you like a merchant or designer - please keep them in mind when buying items. Or when someone is new and they want hair or clothing. Because if you forget about them, or decide to only shop at one store - the one that you loved my very well disappear.

On that note - I just found out that one of the stores I have at a mall will have to close. SC Designs mall is closing. This is just awful. It seems like the stores and malls are all tumbling like dominoes. Who's next? How long before only a handful of designers/merchants are left in SL? Is this something that Linden Labs was planning for? I know I'm spinning conspiracy theories etc., but its hard not to notice certain nefarious goings on.

Cropped Leather Jacket

New leather jacket - sculpted prims... I spent an inglorious amount of time on the sculpts and the textures. Hope you like! The is a sculpted prim jacket so you will have to modify since I do not currently have all of the shapes ever made - but no probs, the entire thing is copy mod. Just make sure to create a copy and stash it somewhere safe in your inventory before messing with it. There is a jacket layer for the avatar so that if the sculpts go through or whatever you won't have "odd" skin showing through. Only 200L.

New Release and New Location

New Main Store Location
Happy New Year and Decade too. As I embark on this new year/decade my mind stays focused on new possibilities for Second Life and in my life. As you all know Soigne was sold because of several reasons (which I won't get into) but because of that the SIM owner has had to make that sim into an adult themed venue. While some of my items might be something that those who endeavor in that type of entertainment that they would buy - I really want the shopping experience to remain extraordinary and something that my customers enjoy and will want to come back to. I feel that this would not be possible on an adult themed SIM.

The SIM owner has given me a new home but one that I am familiar with - Excelsior SIM. The same SIM that WISH shoes calls home. The perveyor of WISH, Welpie Heinrichs is someone who has been a friend and supporter and has let me use part of her store as a satellite store, so some of you may have already been to the SIM and know that it is a haven for anyone with a craving for clothes, shoes, skins etc.

My only chagrin is that SODA is not coming with me. I really am trepidatious in this move without my old friend Charlotte Morelett, as she is the one who introduced me to SL and honestly I owe her a lot in more ways than one.

In any case - the store has been relocated and you can find all of the SWA items there - here is the slurl if you'd like to stop by and take a peak. It is the same store design that I had changed it over to a few weeks ago but for all intents and purposes - it's a whole new store. I'll write more on it tomorrow but stop by and take a look!

NEW RELEASE - Skulls T-Shirts.

Now I know that most people have enough T-Shirts to choke a virtual horse in SL but honestly a lot of those are based on T-shirt templates and even though Robin Wood's template is great (god bless her - she is one of the most proliferate and well known SL contributers) I feel that it wouldn't be fair for me to use it. So in typical SWA fashion I started from scratch and made another one that I feel exemplifies my skill as a texture artist.

On this T-Shirt I used artwork from GoMedia and DesignUS to create my own design. As you know I can never stop at one color or even a mundane palette of 4 or 5. I've created a Basics, Pastels, White and Black set of the T-Shirt.

The Basics include Red, Blue, Purple, HotPink, Green, Black and White with the designs in analgous colors. This is the same for the Pastel set. The reason I did this is because I wanted to make sure that you as a customer have the choice in your wardrobe to wear the t-shirt you want with the pants you love. So if you have a pair of purple jeans you adore - then you will have the top that can go with it.

I've also created a White and Black set that have the graphics in a set of colors - if you like to wear those shades, now you can wear Black but have a splash of red, green, blue etc. I think that this enables you to wear the basics while spicing it up a little.

If this release is popular enough I will create more designs and offer the same range of colors in packs. Oh yeah each pack is only 50L - and they all have at least 6 different shirts. Did I mention that these T-shirts have the added length? Yep - they do. And they come on all layers avalable, copy/modify - no transfer.

Soigne SIM - to close

To my regret and chagrin I will have to close down the Soigne SIM.

It was something that I have been trying to keep from happening but renters left, a partner left and now with my original Partner having a RL business of her own, she just hasn't had the time to concentrate on SL. Because of this I cannot keep the SIM/Island.

However - Second Wave Apparel will still have two locations that you can go to for all the SWA goodness and yummy outfits that you desire. SO - it isn't like I'm leaving... no no no, never that. I'll still be here and so will SWA just not so big and bold as before.

I forgot to blog this/didn't have time at the time - but for those of you who didn't know, I made a scrumptious leather mini-dress. A few bloggers have already blogged it so I feel a little weird about releasing it on my blog - but hey, that is what my blog is for and if I don't blog it I would feel as though I'm ignoring the dress. Can't do that. No way. Anyways...

The dress is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. You know I've done various leather outfits and stuff - but I think that after the cross-top redux I found a new process that creates killer textures. While this may not be the absolute best leather dress - I think that you'll agree that it definitely stands out on top. 3 colors for you to slip into - Black, Chocolate and Red. The pieces/parts come on all available layers and everything is copy/mod. Hopefully you'll wear it to death and combine it with all your various jackets, shirts and other ensembles.

I'm particularly proud of the Signs though. I thought the dress reminded me of a Hollywood starlet - particularly back in the 80's. So I did the Hollywood thing - I set the entire thing up in AfterEffects and NOT Photoshop. It works great. I take all my pics against bright green, use the Keylight plug-in/effect to get rid of the green. I also use the 3d camera and depth of field to create a little more realistic perspective. Also lights - the lights are from AfterEffects too. Something that Photoshop just doesn't have - well kinda, but not the same really.

Some of you may or may not have known that I was working on a few things at the same time - when I do this it takes me longer to finish those items but I'll tell you that this one was definitely worth the wait. I think that ColdPlay is responsible for this dress - primarily for their songs "Life in Technicolor" and "Lovers in Japan". OMG I just totally love those songs! So I had to - HAD TO - make this outfit!

The dress is in itself a work of beauty (no I'm not being modest right now, check back in an hour), but I have included China Doll shoes which have the same texturing as the dress, a Parasol with the same iconic dragon and Little gold Baby Dragon Earrings. This outfit is horribly cute and super chik. I dare you to play those ColdPlay songs while you wear it... seriously! Anyway - while researching the dress (trust me everything at SWA is researched to the hilt, usually 1,000s of images and hundreds of pages of information go into each design) I found out that it is actually called a "Cheongsam" - at least that is what all of the factory direct companies from China are referring to it as.

I feel very proud of this and I do hope that you enjoy it as much as I do - more colors may be coming but I wanted to take it slow this time and find out what colors people really wanted/needed.... SO please don't hesitate to ask me or send me what color you think you would like to rock out loud in Asian style.

Cross Tops are BACK!

It's BACK! The Cross-top is now revamped and ohhhh soooo sexy! Textures that really pop and look more realistic than your RL clothing - ok maybe not, but it comes damn close!!!

Right now you can purchase the Black, Red, Pink or White cross-top in a set that includes Latex, Silk and Knit texture... But wait - there's more! It wouldn't be a SWA kinda thing to limit the item to just one thing! No, I had to go and create Boy Shorts to match - so each set includes BoyShorts in matching textures/colors. Tops come on 3 layers and shorts on 2 layers.

All items are copy/mod - no transfer. Each color set is only L$150 - a total steal!!!!

Now initially the clothing images I uploaded were PNGs - looked great until I zoomed in - but no worries I fixed this small issue and I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for GoGo! She's the one with a mac daddy graphics card. Although I did notice it AFTER she pointed it out - I never would have known if it hadn't been for her eagle eye! Anyway - all of the texture issues have been fixed with TGA images. For you designers out there - PNG's may seem like the easy way to go, but don't do it! SL does something to the alpha on those puppies upon import and it ain't pretty.

Cross Top - last day for 1L sale on basic colors

Wanted to let you know that the Cross-Top in all the basic colors is still on-sale at the main store location for just L$ 1.00. The other patterns and such are only L$25. You can get the Pink, Red and Purple cross-tops on XStreet for 1L as well. So hurry and get them today - because I'm taking them down tomorrow and they will not be available again until Version 2.0 comes out. Version 2.0 will not have any seams nor will they have harsh shading or shadow.

The cross top was one of the first items that I made in Second Life and because I've learned so much and come so far (ok, stop laughing) my process is different and my work has improved - I think in some cases it is drastically different, the cross top is a prime example of that. I wanted to revamp the Cross-top and create some really special versions with matching shorts, jeans and skirts for you all - so feel free to make suggestions. Personally I think there needs to be a leather version (woot!), fishnet, sheer, satin, denim and more patterns available - but I'm a complete nut when it comes to iterations and take it past the point of no return. So yeah - if you want something special, I'm all ears!

Another reason I'm revamping the cross top is that I will be offering it in fat packs only and the price will remain very friendly to your virtual wallet. My new price structure will be that cross-tops will come in 5 packs for 25L, the outfits (cross top with matching bottoms of some sort) will only be 50L but will include 3 colors or patterns in each set. Feel free to let me know what you think about this or if you have any suggestions - I would love to hear about it. Just drop a note, comment here or even go to the store and use the notes kiosk that I have at the front door.

This type of price structure will happen throughout the store and I will let you know when the Roman Halter, Cami, laced cami and other items are going to go through it. Hopefully what this will mean is that I won't have to do so many darn pictures, you'll get a lot more for your money, and I can reduce the amount of prims I'm using (I'm a prim hog!!!).

Did you know you can follow me on twitter? I'm not promising anything - as a matter of fact my tweets are all over the place (from photoshop and animation to Second Life) but I do post items regarding SL and my store, so it might be a good idea to follow or if you are interested in learning more skillz as a designer/artist - I find some of the best tutorials out there. Plus I make a few now and again. I'm looking into seperate accounts for the different areas that I seem to delve into - but for now the tweets are pretty much everything that I happen to think of or come across.

I was talking to a few friends this morning about this and that and realized that we are all having "economic" problems and that maybe some of us designers and creators aren't using our talents to their fullest extent to make money. Here is a list of things that you can do to supplement your income as a creative individual:

1. The change round up - go around your house, look in every book, nook, jacket, crevice and cushion for spare change. A few pennies here, a couple of dimes and quite possibly quarters can really add up! Although not creative - it is kind of fun and it is the quickest way to get a few bucks.

2. Create items that would be useful to other artists and sell them online. Yes Second Life is a great way to do this but there are so so so many more avenues for you to explore.

www.renderosity.com - A lot of the content creators on here do similar things to what creators in SL do. But mainly for Poser or DAZ. This doesn't mean your current skills are nil here - adapt! Patterns, Photoshop brushes, 3D objects, High-Res backgrounds and the like are wanted items and will surely sell. Note - these people are very picky and make sure that you read the FAQ and look at what is being offered before diving in. They review each and every file and will throw out anything that is suspicious (i.e. IP infringement).

www.turbosquid.com - A den for all 3D officionatos but that doesn't mean you can't post items here. Photoshop, Illustrator, Patterns and such are welcome too. Check them out and make a store!

www.(insert photo stock house here).com - a lot of stock photography houses are open submission and accept illustrations, patterns and renders. Check out istock.com, dreamstime.com, http://graphicriver.net and www.stockxpert.com

www.payloadz.com - If you have a blog, website or something that you run and has traffic. This site enables you to put items up and sell them yourself. Really easy to use and I have had a few sales on it. Great way to expand your possibilities.

www.deviantart.com - great way to network and such. Also note that items you put here can be sold as a print to others and you get paid! Woot!

3. Create prints of your artwork (see Deviant Art) and sell them at a (insert location here). Pound the pavement, go to flea markets, sell at fairs etc. You never know who might like what you've done... it's worth a try anyway. Also note that crafts and such (bracelets, sculptures etc) can be sold in this manner as well.

4. Post your availability on forums that deal with art or programming (depending on what you specialize in). Deviant art, CGtalk, CG Arena, and other sites have sections that are specifically set up for this. Don't forget to peruse the jobs offered sections to see if anyone could use your services. Note - beware of anyone asking for money upfront, and always get a contract and partial payment upfront!!!

5. Facebook - this social networking site is gaining popularity and has even surpassed myspace in attendance and hits. Make sure that you contact your friends and acquatences and let them know that you are selling this or that. Or if you have something going on with the local artizen fair - friends support each other and I know I would have no problem spreading the word about a friends items if they asked me.

6. Tutorials - tutorials sites are booming right now and there are so many it's hard to keep track. Some sites even PAY to have you write them! Photoshop being the most popular program to write for but I've seen them on 3Ds Max, ZBrush, Poser, Illustrator, After Effects etc. http://tutsplus.com/ is one that is really great and has a lot of different sections. But google online tutorials regarding whatever program and you are sure to find a landslide of sites.

Ok - I've listed just about everything I could think of at the moment - but I'm sure there is more that I've missed. Feel free to chime in and add your own via comments. I look forward to hearing more.

Welpie Heinrichs is a marvelous shoe designer and really wonderful person. If you've never been to her store - you should stop by and check it out. My Day..

I'm writing this because.. I'm exhausted. I love what I do, I love my kids and my family. But here's the thing - I don't have enough time in the day to accomplish everything I want and others want. Right now I want to do more stuff for SL, my portfolio, my kids, the house etc. You name it - I probably have it on my list.

So I wanted to see if I had any time during the day to pick up the slack and did a timeline...

6:00 AM: Alarm goes off, press snooze
6:30 AM: Alarm goes off, press snooze again
6:33 AM: Husband shakes me and mentions I better get up if I want to leave on time
6:34 AM: Fall out of bed, crawl over to dresser and pick out clothes, take shower
6:49 AM: Get dressed
6:55 AM: Run downstairs, snarf breakfast up
7:05 AM: set up coffee maker and turn it on
7:10 AM: Run back upstairs fix hair, brush teeth, put on makeup - go get son up
7:20 AM: Run back downstairs yelling at son "to get a move on - we gotta leave in 5 minutes"
7:23 AM: Make coffee, grab purse and son, head out the door
7:27 AM: Drive up to bus stop and wait with son for the bus.
7:35 AM: Drive to meeting place for car-pool
8:00 AM: Wait around for car-pool partner (my sister doncha know)
8:15 AM: Leave for work, long ass drive though.
9:00 AM: Arrive at work, log in
work work work work work
6:00 PM: Leave work and drive for an hour
7:00 PM: Drop sis off
7:30 PM: Arrive home - usually met by both kids, the dog and the cats. All of whom love me but want food.
7:35 PM: Make dinner, do dishes, throw in a load of laundry
7:55 PM: Eat
8:10 PM: Yell at kids for not doing homework BEFORE I got home. Help with homework and assuage husband's ego
8:50 PM: Open up Photoshop and get to work on my latest creation
9:15 PM: Son/Daughter/Husband/Cat/Dog - one of them or all of them one by one invariably interrupts and needs attention/help
10:30 PM: Back to Photoshop, ZBrush, 3DsMax and/or SL
2:00 AM: Realize how late it is and close programs, stumble upstairs to bed.

I'm tired. I need a time machine or a cloning device - anyone have one? I just simply am frustrated. I feel like I could do more. The biggest time gobblers are my commute and work. But being that work pays the bills - neither can go. Unless someone has copious amounts of money to share or if I win the lottery, or if I somehow start making a ton of change on SL.

Just thought I might share - I'm sure I'm not the only one out there like this. I guess it would be comforting to know if anyone else has time-management problems. Anyone?

Things you can do to increase brand/store awareness...

These questions come up periodically, especially on XStreet forums and the SL forums. So I thought I might address them here. Should you announce your new items every time you make something or should you hold back on them and wait to announce a few at a time? Which groups should I send the notice to? How often should I release stuff? What's a good way to get the word out?

So.... Here's what you should do:

Releasing items:

Release an item once a week or at least every other week. If you are prolific and create bunches of stuff then keep your notices and stuff to 1-2x a week. Here's a list of what you should do once you are ready to announce it to the world.

Announce it in your blog. Get your blog on the Fashion Planet Feed. I don't know how many readers it has, but it's immense and just joining it lets you get a wider audience.
Announce it in your group - create a notecard with a colorful description of the item(s) listing the items or parts that come with the item, how much it is, what colors are available, whether it's copy/mod or mod/transfer. Include pictures of the item in with the notecard so people can see how beautiful it really is. Include your Land Mark, a SLURL to your store, the URL to your blog and the URL to your XStreet listings for that item.
Announce it to Fashion Consolidated, Fashion Life, Fashion-R-US and the plethora of other groups out there for this. For those of you who do not do fashion related items - there are groups that you can announce to, just look around and ask around to find them out.
Announce it in SLUniverse: In the forum, in the SLShopper and in the blog there (you can use that as your blog or RSS feed your blog into that one)
Put all of the items here on XStreet, announce it in the XStreet forums. Make sure to cross-link your items as well as provide a link to your blog and such (use the BBCode to do this). For an example - here's one of mine: Blue Rose Corset & Panties (BTW, you can use BBCode on SLUniverse too!)
Announce it in the SL forums under shopping/new products
Prepare a folder with your items and a notecard with the description and send it to various bloggers. Make sure that you provide images and the URL, Slurl etc in the notecard.

I think that's about it. I'll post another article on which groups are good for what and the "Do's and Dont's" of each group. I'll also cover more about cross-linking and why you should do it etc.

Tired of your sculptys showing up as blobs all the time?

Here's a quick fix that I found on the XStreet forums:

1. Show the "Advanced" menu with Ctrl-Alt-D, or Opt-Ctrl-D on a Mac.
2. Select "debug settings" near the bottom.
3. In the blank space, copy and paste the word:
RenderVolumeLODFactor

I just recently went through a horrifying ordeal that made me kick myself and oh! I was cursing up a storm. Stupid GIRL! Shoulda, woulda, coulda!

Well - I live in Georgia, and we recently had a snowstorm (yeah I know all you that live in the white crap up North are laughing) which knocked out the power. I was doing stuff on SL at the time and the folder that I was in on my drive just happened to hold the past 2.75 years of SL creations. When I logged in today - the folder wouldn't open. OMG! OMG! OMG! It's gone.. Total depression set in and I just about threw up... You can't imagine the consternations and all the thoughts that went through my head.

But... I am not one to give up. After consulting some of my guru friends (Thanks Simone I owe ya big time) I did recover my files... It was gut wrenching though. Thinking about all the files I've created and how much work I put into them. It isn't even like I would need them absolutely but a few I use frequently and as a base for other items (the jeans, the vest, leather pants) so to loose those would mean I'm back to square one. Yuck. Not that I mind creating things - it's just I'd rather focus on the creative aspect of an item and not necessarily the technical side.

I'm just posting this as a word of warning for all of you who create things. Please, save your files to DVD and/or another drive somewhere. Don't be lame, save.

That's what I'm doing right the heck now... Burning DVDs baby.

New Top at SWA

Yes, new as in brand new. No revamp, no re-texture. Totally new. And this is the first design of many to come thanks to CS4. I have to tell you I was rather burnt out in trying to guess at where seams ended and began or, seeing the design you work so hard for begin to crumble when you bring it in world. Don't even tell me that the previewer helps - cause it doesn't. Anyway - the new top is an inspired design that I've seen over and over. I believe the first time I saw it was on Marilyn Monroe and since then in many a fashion magazine since... No I'm not that old, but I do watch old movies...

Tube Top halter with bikini bottoms - you can tuck the top in, leave it untucked or you can wear the bottoms for that 1950s swimwear look. The top is on 3 layers and there is the bottom of the top (somehow it sounds strange to say it that way) on pants layer and the jacket layer in the longer length. Each top comes with matching bikini pants on the underwear layer. Only L$100, but just for a little while you can pick these puppies up for just L$50. Eight different colors in both knit and satin textures - Enjoy!

Ok, so I am up to my eyeballs in creating things, straightening out my Xstreet stuff and organizing inventory. I haven't posted in a while and was feeling guilty. It's a Bletaverse HUD - apparently it gives you the capability to blog DIRECTLY from Second Life. I think this is a way cool tool! I mean how could you not like that? Automatically give Landmarks and such, take snapshots of what you're doing. No more having to save your pics, pull them through Photoshop and then posting them. You can do it on the fly!

Ok - I know the lyrics are "I'll be a Romeo in Black Jeans.." but with these jeans - I feel like Juliet - well a modern version anyway. New release and hopefully you won't burn out on the roses cause I have a ton more in store...

Black Denim Jeans with an Antique rose print that are to die for. They come on 2 layers and have sculpted attachments - however, if you prefer the regular jeans they are modify - so have at it!

Also included with the jeans are SWA shoes that I finally freaking finished. They are platform heels with the same rose print as the jeans. Perfect combo. The shoes are included with the jeans until February 14th and then - well I have something in store for you so let's not spoil it, ok? I'm probably the only one who has little or next to nothing activity. Alas - poor me. What will I do? (names have been blurred out to protect the innocent)

Well I will be releasing some items this weekend - that is if I don't just procrastinate into oblivion...

Any how - I did create some really pretty Rose textures a few days ago and you can buy them at my store for 600L (or you can get them on TurboSquid) and they are full perm - BUT as with all textures you only retain the right to use them in your creation and NOT for reselling. Just FYI

Today I got a few comments on an old post I did on BIABs and IP infringement:

Business In A Box - should be banned...

The jest of the comment from today was that "How am I supposed to know if I have permission to use these textures/items?"

The answer: only buy from reputable sources

Reputable means that the seller is established and has a good track record - also they will include a statement saying that they hold the resell rights to those textures/item and will delineate how and where you can use them.

There are a few people who are reputable and do sell merchant resources - but a vast majority of the BIABs are fraudulent and the textures and items that are included were obtained through nefarious means. People getting into the fashion scene and who are looking to make a quick buck can say they "didn't know" or that they were sure the person they bought from was telling the truth - but really we all know that this type of person really did not do their homework and didn't research the "content seller" enough.

Most of the designers and content creators are sick to death of it - simply because there is very little that we can do to stop it. And then where is the line really? I mean there's different levels of IP infringement - the worst is the direct copy using a script copier, open GL image ripper or copybot, the next is where someone rips off an existing brand and uses that brands logo and artwork to sell items; even if the items were made by the artist - the textures used were created by someone else or are trademarked.

My advice/suggestion to anyone even thinking of BIAB or full-perm anything is that you research the merchant and MAKE SURE that that person is legit. These vendors will usually provide screenshots of their creation process and they may even have copyrights done to their items so that you can tell that they are ok.

I know this debate has been rehashed over and over - but it is astounding to see that people still think it isn't a big deal, or that because they didn't know better that it makes it ok.

IDK - I wish there was a simple solution. I wish that in order to become a merchant that a screening process were in place so that people buying items would be at least somewhat secure in knowing that the items were at least made by the vendor or that they have rights to sell them. How many designers/merchants out there would be willing to do this I wonder? Some have fiercly stated that they never would like that - which only casts a suspicious eye on their creations. I know that a lot of designers like me would do it - I certainly would. I would submit my photoshop layers and my original 3d files (for sculpted items) for review - even if I had to pay to have it done, that would be just fine. I make enough money on this that a small fee would be ok by me if it meant that it would clean up some of the rif-raf hanging out there. The only people that I could see controlling this would be Linden Labs - but that is a loaded thought.

Oversight is good as long as the people overseeing it are trustworthy and capable. So who is capable and who is trustworthy - very few, so I guess the quandry will never be solved and we are all mired in a quagmire of mistrust and accusation.

Customer Lists and Subscribe-O-Matic and Kiosks

As you know - I'm pretty active on the XStreet forums and speak my mind with abandon (yes, I know it's a dangerous game). Well anyway - a merchant was asking Qs in the business section about her customer list - apparently someone had filed an AR against her because the group notices were too frequent?

I'm wondering how you guys feel about notices and what you would consider too frequent. Generally I go in spurts - you won't hear from me for about two-three weeks at a time and then I'll send four notices in a week. Is that too much? Should I hold back? I get excited about the products I make and although I do try and plan it out - sometimes sending the notice is what needs to be done at the moment.

Also would you rather be in a traditional SL group or do you like the subscribe-o-matic or kiosk group? With the SL group - it's easy enough to leave the group but with subscribe-o-matic or kiosk groups, you actually have to go to the kiosk to "leave" the group. I also think the potential for abuse is there because you simply just need the avatar name to add them to the group - there is no permission or whatever for the person receiving the group messages. I wouldn't do that - I don't want to make anyone angry or uncomfortable etc... I also want to maintain a good relationship with my customers - if you're happy, then I'm happy.

Which colors are your favorites?

I posted a poll regarding which colors are your favorite for buying clothing or just wearing clothes (for those of you who make things or just stick to freebies). It's interesting to note that so far Black, Red, Pink and Blue are by far the colors that people tend to stick to at SWA. I asked several other merchants and that color range seemed to hold true across the board (a few had purple as an outstanding choice.)

The question was brought up on the XStreet forums and being that I am intensely curious about consumer views and choices - I thought a poll would be a good way to determine what is or isn't popular at the moment. If the color that you like isn't on the poll - speak up and comment here!

There were also a few tools that builders and designers might like that were mentioned in the forum too. One of them is really kinda cool - it's the Name that Color web page. It's really rather neat - because IDK how many times I've tried naming something other than just "RED Pants" etc..

The other utility mentioned was the color schemer, this one has been around for a while and several of you probably have already heard of it. I need testers! I am working on a special project but I only have a few people left in my evaluators group. So - I need guinea pigs, evaluators etc...

Basically you will be given an outfit or an item to evaluate - each item will have a questionnaire note/card that you will be expected to fillout. The perks are that you will see works in progress and get a copy of the item once it is finished in the color of your choosing - IF you complete the questionnaire.

The only thing I ask is that you sign a confidentiality agreement - in other words you aren't allowed to breathe a word about the items or share pictures with your friends.

Other stipulation is that you at least know how to create and save a notecard, how to wear an outfit, and how to resize an item once you are wearing it.

If you think you're up to the task and you want the latest cutting edge items - send me a notecard with your avatar name. I would love to have you! Oh yeah - it is an SL group so you have to have a slot open to do this...

Iseult (my little sister in RL) the owner of Bonbonniere decided that she really didn't need such a large store and because of that we opened up some new shops for rent. Here's a pic of the stores as they look now. We are looking mainly for up and coming designers and people who believe in making their own merchandise. The people that we really need is a hair designer and maybe a mens clothing shop. Perks are that you will be able to send a notice once a week to the Soigne Updates group and Kiosk group and I pay for a 3k ad for Soigne once a week which will include your store name. If you are interested and want to rent from me - send me a Notecard with a few pics of your merchandise as well as how long you've been in business. Having thought about Anne Boleyn and pondering her fate and her beauty.. I decided to go ahead and revil in my obsession and make a dress. This one is loosely based off of an image I saw on CGTalk . In anycase - this is what I came up with....

The dress comes with a top on all 3 layers and glitch pants on two layers
Flexi Prim skirt and a system skirt, plus sculpted prim poofy sleeves.

The Tiara I am wearing in the picture along with earrings and necklace are from BonBonniere and are very adorable - they absolutely go with this gown! You can find her store in the same sim as mine - just across the river.

I found this really cool little gadget, and yes I realize it's been out for a while, but for those who aren't in the know this gizmo actually gives you a live update of avatars on your sim via a webpage. Now you don't have to own the land - nor do you have to have an entire SIM, just the ability to place objects there and to run scripts.

Soigne Group freebie - and how to join the group

Ok - a word on the SWA, SODA and Bonbonniere groups - no we're not going to abandon you completely. But we are moving everyone over to the SoigneKiosk and Soigne-Updates groups - what this means is that you will get 3X the freebies. We will try and limit it to 1-2 notices per week.

Any way - if you join the Soigne-Updates SL group or the Kiosk group, you will get a free Cami-Laced Dress in white! Go ahead and click on the Kiosk and get the item or join the group and look at the most recent notice to get the item. Either way you win.

Another thing to note is that special sales that will be available only to SL group members will be going out - you will have to wear your group tag to participate and get the advantage.

Ok - so not exactly free.

What I want are sophisticated avatars that like to shop and like to go to swank locations that are popular... I will GIVE you the clothing and payment for your time. All that it would require is that you wear a SWA outfit at heavily populated sims and put the description and slurl of SWA in your profile - that's it. What I need from you in a notecard is - hourly rate, daily rate, availability. You must have a good skin and hair and shoes...

NEW SWA Store at DIS Secluded Cove Mall

Ok - new store, but this time at a mall run by the designers...

Second Wave at Secluded Cove

I will be using it as a "New Release" spot, and right now you can go there and get all of the new fall fashions at half of the normal price! The Mall will be open at 12 noon SLT - There will be tons of designers there so please come by and take a look! This mall will be the one hotspot that you can go to that will have the latest and greatest!

Also - I am a part of the grid wide hunt. I have set out 3 pumpkins at my Plush Omicron Store and there is a fall outfit that you cannot buy at the moment in the pumpkins as well as a lingerie set.

Be sure to Stop by the main store to get your freebies before the hunt is over!

Here are the pics from the Fashion Show on Saturday, it was a fabulous show that went off without a hitch - the models did such a great job! Thanks to everyone who worked on this.

All of those fashions are available at the plush omnicron spot. My Sister Iseult is the one who created the Mad Hatter and March Hare costumes - so if you're going to a tea party, get crazy at Bonbonniere! Also you can get the Ruby Slippers for the Dorothy costume and the Glass Slippers and Tiara for the Cinderella Costume. Her store is right there across the way from mine.

New Releases and Fashion Show

I have been very busy - yes very busy indeed. Making costumes, making fall fashions, making sculptys - just madly making things.

Anyway - I have a fashion show tomorrow (October 25th) at 3PM SLT and YOU are invited. Yeppers - I want you to come and see the latest and greatest at SWA.

The fashion show will be a combination of Fall Fashions AND Costumes by me and my sister at Bonbonniere. Also Charlotte Morelett threw a really nice and witchy green skin together just for the Wicked Witch costume - you have to come to the show to see the costumes as I won't be releasing them until AFTER the show. The Fall Fashions are already on the floor and available for purchase so if you can't wait - go ahead and peek - but the costumes are a must see.

On a side note: A fellow designer released some really cute bikinis in animal prints - and since I know that you love animal print items (who doesn't?) Did you get your jeans yet? You have approximately 3 hours in which to either go to the main store or buy the dollarbies on SLX or OnRez. After that - the sale is OVER and prices return to normal (which BTW, I've been told are very reasonable). Also the Ripped jeans and Stars Jeans will only be available through OnRez and SLX after tonight - so hurry up and get the first wave of jeans that were made by me when I first arrived in SecondLife.
